Land-use patterns, location choice, and travel behavior: Evidence from São Paulo

Global South cities are vastly underrepresented in the literature that analyzes relationships between location choice, land-use patterns and travel behavior. This paper aims to reduce underrepresentation by bringing new evidence from a metropolitan region South. We estimate Structural Equation Model study patterns, car ownership behavior, while controlling for self-selection, of São Paulo, Brazil. The model structure is adapted previous applications include variables related with specific aspects studied region, inclusion informal work people working two jobs, simultaneously cohort effects associated being millennial. results support claim influence even area showing strong income-based spatial segregation levels. More specifically, commuting distance act as important mediators total amount mode patterns. In contrast this framework, income plays stronger role, an indication relevant residential sorting. Cohort also visible, millennials prefer live central, accessible, mixed areas, own fewer cars, less car, use public transit non-motorized modes more frequently.
